The Last Hurrah is an adaptation of the 1956 novel The Last Hurrah by Edwin O'Connor.[4] An aging Irish-American mayor is preparing for yet another election campaign. Aided by his nephew, Adam Caulfield (Jeffrey Hunter), and savvy strategist John Gorman (Pat O'Brien), Skeffington faces considerable challenges as the political landscape that he knows is slowly crumbling away, but, undaunted, he remains determined to stay in the game a bit longer. Tracy was nominated as Best Foreign Actor by BAFTA and won the Best Actor Award from the National Board of Review, the latter which also presented Ford their award for Best Director
