The Power of the Month is Zeal

Zeal is the faculty of enthusiasm, intensity, and exuberance.  It is a power that generates interest, and engages the creativity energy of the universe.  Zeal provides our inner urge to progress; it is our motivation to achieve.  The highest expression of zeal is in an unflagging, fervent interest in knowing, speaking and doing good.

“Zeal is fit only for wise man, but is found mostly in fools.” -- Thomas Fuller M.D. 1732.  Zeal is a necessary faculty of mind, but it is also very sensitive, easily misunderstood and misused. Charles Fillmore placed the physical center for the faculty of zeal at the medulla of the brain; that is the base of the brain or the back of the neck.  It seems logical that when we experience those back of the next tension headaches that it’s usually preceded by emotionally upset, anxiety, fearfulness or impatience. In these instances, our faculty of zeal is unwisely used and results are a short circuit of power, and stress at the zeal center.

Yes Zeal is a sensitive faculty and unless it is under the direction of the indwelling Christ, it is prone to boil over.  Countless people lead mediocre lives because they lack the ability to preserve.  They may “catch the fire” with a certain project or idea, but the fire soon burns out, and these people return to their routine, challenge-filled lives.  This is because their faculty of zeal is motivated not by an inner spark, but by some outer suggestion or excitement. We see an example of this in high-powered sales meeting or rallies.

Although zeal is often associated with wild-eyed, intense fanatic people, true zeal is quiet continuous, patient, persevering in a calm way in spite of events and people or circumstances that would distract it.  Inner motivated zeal is constant, durable, and persistent – because it flows from a spiritual source within you.  Zeal is rather like the song “Old Man River” it just keeps rolling along. As you bless your and quicken your faculty of zeal and commit it to the control and direction of the Christ within, you will find yourself with boundless energy, never tiring, but always active – unhurried and graceful, gracious and persistent.                                                  Charles Roth – A Twelve-Power
