Minister's Letter for September 2025
I Fairly Sizzle with Zeal
I think it is intriguing, how the Fillmore’s and Unity lined our twelve Spiritual Faculties up with each of the months, and how the faculty of Zeal fell into the month of October. Perhaps that is why the words of Charles that most stick out in my mind are “I fairly sizzle with Zeal and enthusiasm and leap forth with a mighty faith to do that which is mine to do!” Something he said at the age of 92. Charles Fillmore was an extraordinary man who allowed little to deter him. He looked within to acknowledge the Christ Presence and allowed his faculty of zeal to lead the way. When I get up and go outside as October begins, I can feel the energy of zeal bursting forth. For some reason, as the temperatures begin to cool and the days shorten, the colors of nature seem to be more intense. And for some reason this year, my Rose of Sharons, Crepe Myrtles and Hibiscus, are all still in full bloom. The leaves are beginning to change and the colors are reflecting off Laker Hefner’s surface. With the cooler weather and brighter more intense colors, I feel the zeal for life just bursting forth within me. Wow.
In years gone by, October would be a time of celebrating the Harvest, as crops of every kind were brought in. Delicious energy giving substance that charged us Human Beings with Life. People around the world would take time to celebrate the wonders of nature being provided to us. This is one of the reasons we have a variety of events that celebrate this giving forth of Mother Nature. One very notable event that occurs is Halloween, which actually evolved out of the Celtic Tradition called Samhain, which literally means “End of Summer.” Samhain was believed to be a magical time. The Celts believed that times of transition - like the interval between night and day - were instances when the boundaries between our phsical world and the Spiritual Realm were the thinnest, and at just the right time you could cross over and adventure into the Spiritual Realm. This concept is what gave rise to a number of “Spiritual Adventure Movies;” like Star Dust, The Avatar Last Air Bender Series, and The Harry Potter Series. Talk about leaping forth with zeal and enthusiasm.
This indeed can be an intriguing time of year, when we can ignite the Creative Energy of Spirit. Cooler weather and the movement of Mother Nature, can lift us up with the energy of Zeal, where we experience the wonder and splendor of life. Which is why Unity Spiritual Life Center’s Board of Trustees, has decided to embark on a couple of events that might move your soul. Like sponsoring the Chilie Cookoff on October 19th. Talk about jumping into the Zeal of Life. The variety of different kinds of delicious Chili at Unity Spiritual Life Center, has always got people talking and moving. Maybe you could cook your favorite chili to spice the day up with zeal and enthusiasm. We have also decided to become more aware of what has become Native American Month. Yes, October is Native American Month. What can we do to celebrate Native American History and rituals? Showing the movie Dances with Wolves, is one of the ways we decided we could explore Native American History, and celebrate the zeal of life, that the Native Americans demonstrated in so many different ways.
Another thing we decided we will do to celebrate the Zeal of Life is have a Potluck Picnic on the Labyrinth in honor of Samhain, on Sunday November 2nd. Believe it or not our Labyrinth’s design is from Scotland, and one of the things the Ancient Celt’s would do on the day of Samhain would be to walk the Labyrinth. They hoped that as they walked the Labyrinth when the veil that separates the physical dimension from the Spiritual was at its thinnest, they might experience the wonders of the Spiritual Dimension. So, you are invited to join us in this pursuit. You are also invited to bring your favorite potluck dish, and pull a few weeds, because we will all be eating outside in the wonder and goodness of the garden.
Namaste! RevDocPatrick
