A New Earth

This is a spiritual guidebook that explores means of transcending the ego in effort to bring not only personal joy and satisfaction but also global peace. Tolle outlines a down to earth, psychologically based plan for diminishing negative thinking, attachment to material things, and destructive emotional patterns. As with all of Tolle's work, this book is deeply rooted in eastern philosophy and teachings.
In this book, Tolle follows up on the concepts he presents in The Power of Now, using the idea that the ego depends on things such as possessions, roles, and labels that build it up, but that the ego is never fully satisfied. The ego constantly wants more; more wanting and more having are hallmark qualities of the ego.
Tolle describes the human "pain body" that contains accumulated emotional hurts, negativity, drama, and stored trauma. The author goes on to explain how to recognize these patterns and break the pain body cycles that destroy our peace.
The author encourages us to use a detachment practice to address past regrets as well as anxiety about the future. He offers suggestions and ideas of how to be conscious in the present moment instead.
Tolle explains that while people generally identify strongly with what they do or acquire as their purpose and identity, our real purpose comes from a deeper level of consciousness, awake in the present moment.
By practicing the power of now, life unfolds in the present moment, according to our focus. We no longer fight against reality but practice peacefulness from the inside out. Acceptance, nonresistance and detachment become a way of life as life unfolds in the present moment.

Christ of Galilee
In the ever-radiating Presence of a power I cannot see;
I can feel the Christly essence of the man of Galilee.
His cloak is ‘round about me, his words clearly in my ears;
No longer do I fear the tempest, nor the passing of the years.
The loving truth he taught me will forever be my guide;
I shall no longer stumble upon the path at eventide.
For the ever-radiating presence of this power I cannot see;
Holds me safely and securely, O blessed Christ of Galilee.
