Love Knows the Way
“Love – is the power that draws the fragments of the universe together and binds them into a divine harmony. Love is the attracting, harmonizing, unifying faculty of Spirit; it is the building force of the universe. Love is our ability to comprehend our oneness with all things.” These are the words of Teilhard De Chardin, in his book The Phenomena of Man, which was originally written in the 1930’s. When I first read these words in the 1990’s, it literally blew my mind, and it transformed my understanding of the word “love,” and how it is used in relation to Mother Earth, Nature and the world of Living Energy all around us. Teilhard de Chardin originally wrote these words in an essay. He was a French geologist, paleontologist, philosopher, and a Jesuit priest. Due to his being a French Jesuit priest, his essay was not allowed to be published; however he had given the writing to a relative, who decided to have it published in 1955, after his transition.
With the way I was raised in a very orthodox Catholic family, Teilhard de Chardin’s life and the opening words above, caused a lot of internal processing to happen within me. First because Teilhard was a French geologist and a Jesuit Priest, which to me was a conflict in terms, you couldn’t be a priest and a scientist, oh my! That would have been completely against the rules in which I was raised in. At a Unity Worldwide Conference, Barbara Marx Hubbard explained her relationship with Teilhard! I sat in complete disbelief, as she explained his understanding of the process of evolution, which leads to increasing complexity, culminating in “the unification of consciousness.” Yes, “Love is the power that draws the fragments of the universe together and binds them into a divine harmony, the whole universe and everything in it.”
As I processed these words and that day’s workshop, I realized this was, and is, the way the word “Love” is used throughout the Bible! “Love is the attracting, harmonizing, unifying power of the Breath of Life (Spirit)… It is our ability to comprehend our oneness with all things.” When I hear and feel this understanding of the word Love, what is written in 1st John chapter 4 makes so much more senses. “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is aware of and knows God. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and God’s love is perfected in us! As Teilhard, “a Catholic priest,” is indicating, God isn’t a mean bully up there in the sky looking down at us and judging us, but rather is the Life Force, “the field of Living Energy that we live move and have our being immersed within” (Acts 17:27). Love isn’t about western culture’s craziness about relationships, as seen on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, but rather about understanding our “Oneness with the Infinite One” and with the “All of Life.”
I believe the time has come, as The Prophet Jeremiah shared in Jeremiah 31:31, “The Lord said,” ‘The time is coming, when I will make a new covenant with those who strive to know my Presence… I will speak my Creative Energy within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their Life Energy, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know “The I Am”, from the least to the greatest. I will forgive them their iniquities and remember their error no more.
Yes I believe the time has come that we, human kind, you and I, must awaken to Love’s Presence (the Life Force) that permeates every cell of our being and surrounds and enfolds us in each and every moment. What would it be like, if we went for a walk, and we could feel this Life Force, (Love Presence), all about us, in the plants, the trees, the animals and in the birds as they sing. As Teilhard said “Love is the attracting, harmonizing, unifying faculty of Spirit; it is the building forces of the universe. Love is our ability to comprehend our Oneness with all of life.” Wow!
