Healing Letters
by Myrtle Fillmore
Myrtle Fillmore and her husband, Charles, co-founded Unity in 1889. This book is made up of extracts from letters that Myrtle wrote to people addressing their concerns. Reading her book gives us insight into Myrtle’s personality and why she attracted followers.
The majority of Myrtle's letters discuss how to develop your Christ-Mind and recover your spiritual and physical health. Myrtle experienced serious health issues herself when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which in that time period, was an almost certain death sentence. Myrtle decided to claim her inheritance as a Child of God, the Creator. By recognizing that she, as are we all, are children of our Creator and therefore, Divine and Perfect, Myrtle began her spiritual healing process. As her spiritual healing occurred, it manifested as physical healing.
Myrtle believed that any form of denial of the Christ-Mind results in negativity
manifesting physically in some way. The body responds to change of mind, so Myrtle advises us not to acknowledge that we have an illness. Instead, we choose to act in accordance with the Christ-Mind, living in Divine Will. Healing occurs in the physical body once we are in alignment with the Christ-Mind.
In order to connect with the Christ-Mind, Myrtle describes how to “go into the silence.” To reach this state of silence during prayer and/or meditation, we direct our attention from our head to our Heart, where we go into our inner chamber, shut the door, and pray, and then still our mind, which allows us to open up to the Christ-Mind. We feel immersed in God’s Love, and know only God exists within us. Then we thank God for already receiving the good that we asked for.
Developing the Christ-Mind means letting go of what we see in the material world, and also letting go of our dependence on other people. We can then function using our Spiritual faculties. On this level, the Christ-Mind in us gives us everything we need for a joyful life.
Myrtle suggests that we write a letter to God, asking for what our Heart truly desires. Then we are to go on about our business, not fretting about the outcome, instead leaving it up to God to handle. By staying in harmony with the Christ-Mind, we attract whatever we need.
I recommend that you read this book to help learn how to live as a Divine Child of our Creator. You can find this book in our Unity Bookstore.

What Do You Have To Lose?
A short time ago in our newspapers, there was the story of a young woman who was told that, if after being hypnotized, she could arise from her chair and walk over to a small table and pick up a large sum of money lying there, she could have the money for her own. She was not able to do this, and of course she did not receive the money. Someone asked her how it felt to lose such a large sum of money, to which she replied, “It was not mine to lose!”
This is an old principle of Truth, but it bears much repetition and re-emphasis in our daily living. Nothing is really man’s in this world to lose, but he has everything to gain, provided he seeks such things for the purpose of using them with the knowledge that they are not his to lose and that his acquirement of them is not his gain, but God’s, who gave them. Even man’s life is not his to lose – that’s the reason Jesus Christ tried so hard to get man to do the things with his life and his body that would honor God and preserve life.
