For the month of April, the USLC Board of Directors has selected Positive Tomorrows to be the recipient of our monthly tithe to a local charitable organization. Positive Tomorrows has provided education to homeless children since 1989 and their Mission is educating homeless children and their families to break the cycle of poverty. Given that Oklahoma ranks as the 7th worst state for homeless children, and that 1 in 10 students in the OKC Public School System is homeless (almost 9,000 children) their goals include:
1. Removing barriers that get in the way of a child’s learning including hunger, lack of transportation and basic necessities.
2.Providing a robust intensive and individualized education to homeless kids who are often behind.
3.Empowering homeless families to become self-sufficient and gain stability.
They are in the midst of a building fundraising campaign as they have had to turn away 100 students a year. The planned 36,000 square-foot elementary school will have classrooms for birth through the 5th grade. The Board is seeking to assist Positive Tomorrows help more kids and bring an end to the cycle of homelessness. If you would like to make your own donation to this cause, you can deposit cash into the Donation Box on the dessert table in the Fellowship Hall which will be forwarded to the agency, or you can go online to donate at their website @ www.positivetomorrows.org. By giving for those in need right now, we all have an opportunity to beam our “candle” and in so doing, the Universe shines with us and a peaceful and joyous balance is achieved.
