Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Backpack Program
The local tithe recipient for January
On a Monday way back in 2003 an elementary school student fainted while waiting in the school lunch line, due to lack having food to eat over the weekend. That’s when and how the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank's Backpack Program started as a pilot program in 2003. Are you aware that without this program 7,000 in Oklahoma Count would be going to bed every weekend night without having a meal during that day? How sad is that? I was so overwhelmed and amazed at these numbers, provided by the state government! The program provides chronically hungry children with backpacks filled with non-perishable, nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf-stable food to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. During the 2015-2016 school year, the Backpack Program served 18,816 elementary school students attending 512 schools across 53 central and western Oklahoma counties, providing more than 2 million meals for chronically hungry children. This month’s local tithe will be going to this apparently critically needed program. If you would like to make a larger donation, please do so, either through the Unity Spiritual Life Center, or directly. The also welcome help in packing the backpacks going to these children in need of a meal!
